What is a Prompt?

A prompt is simply the message or question you type to ChatGPT. The better your prompt, the better and more accurate your answer will be.

Think of it like giving instructions to a very smart student. A vague instruction gives poor results. A clear, detailed instruction gives excellent results.

Bad Prompt vs Good Prompt

❌ Bad Prompt Example: "Write about Pakistan"
✅ Good Prompt Example: "Write a 300-word introduction about Pakistan for a school project. Use simple English, include geography, culture, and famous places. Make it interesting for 12-year-old students."

5 Basic Prompt Rules (For Beginners)

Follow these 5 simple rules to get good results from ChatGPT every single time:

1

Be Clear and Specific

Tell ChatGPT exactly what you want. Do not use vague instructions — the more specific you are, the better the output.

2

Give Context

Explain the situation or background — who you are, what the purpose is, and who the target audience is.

3

Mention the Format

Tell ChatGPT how you want the answer — as a list, table, email, essay, or bullet points.

4

Set the Length

Specify how long the answer should be — 200 words, 500 words, 3 paragraphs, or just a short summary.

5

Define the Style

Mention the tone — simple English, professional, friendly, like a teacher, or like a beginner's guide.

Level 1 — Basic Prompts You Can Use Today

These are ready-to-use prompts. Just copy, paste, and replace the brackets with your own details:

For Students:

COPY THIS PROMPTExplain photosynthesis like I am a 10-year-old student. Use very simple words and give a real-life example.
COPY THIS PROMPTCreate 10 multiple-choice questions on Chapter 5: Fractions with correct answers included.

For Writing:

COPY THIS PROMPTWrite a short, friendly email to my teacher asking for an extension on my assignment. My name is [your name].
COPY THIS PROMPTWrite an Instagram caption for a photo of the sunset in Karachi. Make it emotional and add relevant emojis.

For Daily Life:

COPY THIS PROMPTGive me a simple 7-day study timetable for a Class 9 student who wants to score above 90% in exams.
COPY THIS PROMPTPlan a low-budget 3-day trip to Murree for a family of 4. Include food, stay, and travel costs.

Level 2 — Intermediate Prompt Techniques

Now let us make your prompts more powerful with these three proven techniques:

Technique 1 — Role-Playing (Very Effective)

Tell ChatGPT to act as a specific expert. This makes the answers much more focused and relevant.

EXAMPLEYou are a friendly math teacher with 10 years of experience. Explain algebra step by step to a beginner student.
EXAMPLEAct as a professional career counselor. Review my CV and suggest specific improvements to help me get hired faster.

Technique 2 — Chain of Thought (Step by Step Thinking)

Ask ChatGPT to think step by step before giving the final answer. This is especially useful for math, logic, and analysis.

EXAMPLESolve this math problem step by step and explain each step clearly: [paste your problem here]
EXAMPLEThink step by step before giving the answer. What are the pros and cons of starting a small business in Pakistan?

Technique 3 — Few-Shot Prompting (Give Examples)

Give ChatGPT a few examples of what you want, then ask it to continue with the same pattern.

EXAMPLEClassify these sentences as Positive or Negative: "I love this product!" → Positive "The service was very bad." → Negative Now classify: "The movie was okay but too long."

Level 3 — Advanced Prompt Engineering (Pro Level)

These techniques are used by professionals and content creators to get expert-level results from ChatGPT:

Technique 1 — System Prompt (Set the Personality First)

Start a new chat by telling ChatGPT who it is — before asking any question. This sets the entire tone of the conversation.

FIRST MESSAGE — SYSTEM PROMPTYou are an expert content writer who writes SEO-friendly blog posts in simple English for Pakistani beginners. Always use short paragraphs and simple vocabulary.

After this, every question in that chat will be answered in that expert voice.

Technique 2 — Task + Constraints + Output Format

Give ChatGPT a complete brief — task, requirements, and exact output format — all in one prompt.

ADVANCED PROMPT EXAMPLECreate a blog post about "Best Free AI Tools 2026". Requirements: — 800 words — Use headings and bullet points — SEO friendly — Target audience: beginners in Pakistan — End with a conclusion and FAQ section

Technique 3 — Iterative Prompting (Improve in Rounds)

Get a first draft, then refine it step by step. Do not expect perfection in the first response.

1

First: Get the Draft

Ask ChatGPT to write the first version of what you need.

2

Then: Refine It

Say: "Improve this draft and make it more engaging and professional."

3

Finally: Finalize

Say: "Now shorten this to 300 words and add a strong opening sentence."

Common Prompt Mistakes to Avoid

⚠️

Being Too Vague

"Write something about AI" — this gives a generic, useless answer. Always be specific about topic, length, and purpose.

⚠️

Asking Multiple Questions at Once

Ask one thing at a time. If you need multiple things, break them into separate messages for better results.

⚠️

Using Complicated English

Write in simple, clear language. ChatGPT understands plain English better than overly complex sentences.

⚠️

Not Mentioning the Format

Without specifying a format, ChatGPT gives generic paragraph answers. Always mention: list, table, email, bullet points, etc.

⚠️

Expecting 100% Perfect Facts

ChatGPT can make mistakes — especially with numbers, dates, and recent events. Always verify important information from reliable sources.

Practice Exercise — Try These Right Now

Open ChatGPT and try these prompts immediately to practice what you have learned:
